What presents to take to India for Diwali?

I’m going to Delhi for Diwali to meet my boyfriend’s family (he is Indian). I met his mother before, but this time I will meet his whole family in what is also my first trip to India. I will be staying in their house and would like to bring them some gifts (this is appropriate, isn’t it?). What would be best to give them in this situation (for his mother, sister and grandmother (his father passed away)).
Any other tips would be greatly appreciated!

This question is for non-indians please.?

Most of us in India know of Chirtsmas, as well as Ramzan.

Same way, are you familiar with the festival of lights, or the festival of "Good, conquering over evil" called "Deepavali" or "Diwali".

Wish you a Happy Deepavali.

How is diwali celebrated in india?

Here in Fiji islands, the hindus invite their non hindu friends and neighbors to their place at night for sweets and dinner. Is it the same in india?

In the festival of lights (or Diwali), I would like to entertain kids with sparklers (because of the lack of serious firecrackers we enjoy back in India). I know firecrackers are banned in California. How about sparklers? I believe they are used a lot in weddings.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Happy Diwali (Deepavali) to all in advance!

How are you all going to celebrate Diwali?

I’ll bring the crackers.

When is Enthiran's release? This Deepavali?

being die-hard fans of rajni, both i and my husband are looking forward to it eagerly. some say this deepavali, some say next tamil new year, some say even later than that. i think maybe those of u in chennai have a better idea. (im a malaysian).
anyway im just hoping that shankar wont spoil it the way he did to sivaji. i didn’t like it.
kumar, dont you think something lacked in sivaji? it was like a cocktail of 3-4 storylines in one movie. so obvious that they couldn’t decide on which is the best story and ended up mixing everything but nothing stood out at last. is the story about bribery? or free education? or loophles in the law? or is it about winning over the villain? everything was so mixed up and in the end nothing stayed in my memory. and the final ‘perfect india’ ending scenes were added along with the credit roll, which im pretty sure went unnoticed by many who were already walking out of the cinema. shreya (particularly her clothes) didnt suit rajni’s image. it was like a ‘too many cook, spoil the soup’ movie. something lacked. the only thing i remember about sivaji now is few of the songs.
thats what im afraid will happen again – two/three ‘jaambavans’ collaborating, there’s a risk of a ‘bad soup’ being served.

Deepavali Open House 2007

Deepavali, or also known as Diwali is celebrated during the seventh month of the Hindu solar calendar. In many respects it resembles the traditions followed in the Indian subcontinent. ‘Open Houses’ are held where Hindu Malaysians welcome fellow Malaysians of different races and religions to their house for a sumptuous meal. ‘Open House’ or ‘Rumah Terbuka’ is a practice very much unique to Malaysia and show the goodwill and friendly ties practised by all Malaysians during any festive occasion.
